4th Class Trip to the Library

Published by under 3rd & 4th Class

Today 4th class visited Athlone Library to listen to a talk given by children’s author and illustrator, Alan Nolan. Alan was born in Dublin and he has written and illustrated many books and comics for children and grown-ups, including Fintan’s Fifteen, Conor’s Caveman and the Murder Can Be Fatal series.

Alan told 4th class all about his life and what it is like to be an author and illustrator of children’s books. He discussed his books, how he writes and illustrates them and his plans for future books. He also gave the children a demonstration on how to draw one of his most popular characters from his books. 4th class were encouraged to draw their own interpretation of the character and they created some brilliant drawings.

Everyone really enjoyed the talk and demonstration and Alan even signed the classes pictures before they left!!

We would like to say a big thank you to Alan Nolan and Athlone Library for organising the talk.

Active Week – Day 2

Published by under School News,Sports News

Everyone enjoyed Day 2 of Active Week in Cornafulla today. Sandra and Dave came to our school. These two instructors work for Rinka in Monksland, Athlone. They worked with the three Infant classes and Ms Dunne’s 1st Class today. Sandra and Dave did fun activities with the children. They set up an obstacle course for them and did some Gymnastics with them. Sandra and Dave played a very funny game called Sheep Tag with the children. They all absolutely loved this game! The older classes will get to do Rinka on Thursday.

All of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class pupils had a Soccer Blitz in the afternoon.

Mrs Fitzgerald came into some of the classes to talk about healthy eating in the morning and in the afternoon. She gave booklets to the children and talked to them about the importance of bringing healthy lunches to school. Mrs Fitzgerald was delighted to hear that the children in Cornafulla are very good for drinking water and milk at school. In the afternoon, Mrs Fitzgerald invited some of the classes out to the courtyard. These children got to taste strawberries, oranges, peaches, peas, pineapple, etc. She bought all of the fruit in Lidl. Thanks to Mrs Fitzgerald, Ms O’Brien, Ms Madden, Ms Lennon, Ms Glynn and Ms Browne for preparing all the fruit for us!

Best of Luck Liam!!!

Published by under Infants,School News

Today was Liam’s last day working in Cornafulla NS. He gave a box of sweets to every class. Ms Lennon made a lovely cake and buns for Liam and the rest of the staff. There will be a special assembly for Liam on Wednesday 7th June.

The Infants will be gone home for this assembly so we had our own gathering in Ms O’ Connell’s classroom this afternoon. Ms O’ Connell asked the children what work does Liam do. They said he takes care of the school, knocks down the balls for them, cuts the grass, looks after the plants and flowers, fixes things, etc. The children think Liam is busier than the teachers! Ms O’ Connell’s Junior Infants, Ms Finn’s Senior Infants and Ms Egan’s Senior Infants made a special book for Liam. Niamh Lennon presented this book to him. He said that he will read it the next day it is raining!

We all will really miss Liam. He was always so nice to the staff and the children. Liam helped us all at some stage over the years. Best of luck Liam! Thanks for everything!
